Many people can't correctly distinguish these several parameters. The leading brand Feng Runda of PoE switches simply introduces and summarizes them to help people distinguish correctly.

1. Throughput

Throughput refers to the amount of data (in units of bits, bytes, etc.) that the network, device, port, or other facility successfully transmitted in a unit of time. That is, throughput refers to the device without any frame loss. The maximum data rate that can be received and forwarded.

The size of the throughput is mainly determined by the internal and external network port hardware of the network device and the efficiency of the program algorithm, especially the program algorithm. For a device that requires a large number of operations, the low efficiency of the algorithm will greatly reduce the communication volume.

2. Bandwidth

Throughput and bandwidth are easy words to confuse. When discussing the bandwidth of a communication link, it generally refers to the number of bits per second that can be transmitted on a link. It depends on the link clock rate and the channel coding, which is also called line speed in computer networks. The bandwidth of Ethernet is 100Mbps.

However, it is necessary to distinguish between the available bandwidth (bandwidth) on the link and the number of bits (throughput) that can be transmitted per second in the actual link. It is generally more preferred to use the term "throughput" to refer to the performance of a network. Because the reality is affected by various inefficiencies (such as the communication of dual-card devices, link status, etc.), a pair of nodes connected by a link with a bandwidth of 100 Mbps may only reach a throughput of 50 Mbps. This means that applications on one host can only send data to another host at 50 Mbps.

In simple terms, bandwidth emphasizes the maximum speed that can be achieved, while throughput emphasizes the speed in real situations.

3. Packet forwarding rate

For network equipment, in addition to this important indicator of throughput, there is a main indicator is the packet forwarding rate, which is often referred to as the packet forwarding rate, packet forwarding rate generally refers to full-duplex 64-byte packets Throughput, this indicator includes both throughput and coverage of message forwarding rates.

The packet forwarding rate measurement standard for wire-speed ports is based on the shortest Ethernet 64-byte packet (Layer 2 or Layer 3) in IEEE 802.3. The formula is as follows: Packet Forwarding Rate (pps) = Throughput / (84byte x 8bit)

For 100M Ethernet, the packet forwarding rate of a wire-speed port = 100,000,000bps/672bit=0.148Mpps

For Gigabit Ethernet, the packet forwarding rate of a wire-speed port = 1,000,000,000bps/672bit=1.488Mpps

For 10-Gigabit SFP ports (with 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports), the packet forwarding rate of a wire-speed port is 10,000,000,000 bps/672 bit=14.88 Mpps.
