Compared to current GSM and LTE networks, the emerging cellular IoT standard can reduce energy consumption while supporting more connection points. Currently, cellular IoT reliability and adaptability testing for road lighting is underway, taking into account both the densely populated central city and the evacuated suburban areas. The characteristics of road lighting make it the core of smart city. Qiu Yihong, chief innovation officer of Philips Lighting, said that the emerging cellular Internet of Things standards have strong appeal in the construction of large-scale smart city infrastructure such as outdoor smart connected lighting. Philips Lighting will collaborate with companies in all sectors, including China Mobile, to lead the way in technology development and lay a solid foundation for the future of smart connected lighting systems. As a new standard for Machine-to-Machine (M2M), cellular IoT technology relies on cellular mobile networks to reduce network operating costs while reducing the energy consumption of networked nodes. Currently, cellular IoT technology is supported by chip manufacturers, module manufacturers and mobile operators. Mobile operators can support cellular IoT systems by simply upgrading their existing network infrastructure to take advantage of the number of connections and operating costs.
