[China Instrument Network Instrument Development] The University of British Columbia, Canada has developed a new type of flexible sensor that can meet the sensor requirements of future folding devices.
The sensor is a highly conductive gel sandwiched between silicone layers. The silicone layer can detect different types of touch, including sliding and percussion, and can stretch, fold, or bend.
According to researchers at the University of British Columbia, there are many types of sensors today, including the Apple 3D touch, which senses stress, and the Samsung AirView, which detects the hovering of fingers. It also has foldable, transparent, and stretchable sensors, but their results feature multiple sensor functions. All in one, with gel and silicone as raw materials, the process is simple, the cost is low and easy to obtain, and it is easy to scale production. The cost per square meter is only a few dollars. Its ductility is strong, it can be applied to any surface or wearable device on the inner wall of the room, and it can also be used as the "skin" of the robot to enable the robot to detect human existence and be sufficiently "soft" to make the human-computer interaction environment safer.
Assuming that the tablet is folded into the size of a cell phone and put into a pocket of clothing, or that the artificial skin senses physical activity and vital signs, it is possible that through their new, inexpensive sensors, the ideal is expected to become a reality.
