Federal-Mogul Corp. announced that its well-developed and innovative two-body oil control ring has entered the market. The product is used in direct-injection gasoline engines. Compared with the traditional two-body oil ring, the patented LKZ(r) oil control ring can reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% and reduce friction by 15%. After adopting the innovative two-body oil control ring technology, the engine has improved overall performance, with advantages such as better fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions and longer oil life. According to reports, the conventional piston ring applies equal pressure to the inner bore of the cylinder, transmits to the crankcase during the downstroke, and transfers to the combustion chamber during the upstroke. Federal-Mogul’s LKZ ring incorporates a stepped surface and taper at the contact edge (or “sealing surfaceâ€) so that the pressure on the cylinder wall can be accurately controlled during the downstroke, while the force is greatly reduced during the upstroke. The lower stroke pressure can more effectively push the cylinder lubricating oil back into the oil pan without entering the combustion chamber because it may generate carbon in the spark plug or cylinder head therein and increase the lubricating oil consumption. “The LKZ ring is very efficient in pushing oil out of the combustion chamber and reducing lubricant consumption, so we can improve the ring tension and reduce friction,†said Johannes Esser, manager of the Federal-Mogul engineering, ring and bushing department. Lower energy requirements mean better fuel economy and less CO2 emissions.†“Unlike conventional oil rings, LKZ rings consistently reduce lubricant consumption throughout the entire life cycle of the engine due to reduced carbon buildup on critical piston parts (eg, above the compression ring),†continued Esser, “carbon accumulation on the pistons. This can lead to damage to the liner and increase the consumption of lubricants. The LKZ ring helps reduce the concerns of vehicle manufacturers and customers in this regard."
